Remember, we are registered for 15 people each volunteer shift, we did not
meet that goal in 2024, but we have started out gang-busters in 2025. It’s
always a good time, and you get to work with other volunteer groups-the
Carpenter’s Union, the Alta High Honor Society, a diversity group from the
University of Utah (sorry, I didn’t get the name). If you would like to volunteer,
and I know you would, let Worshipful Brother Bob Hartman know at his email address which is [email protected].
Spouses, family members over the age of 10 and friends are welcome and invited to help out!

“We Don’t Control Everything. Only the Important Stuff.”
I’m looking right now at a window decal for a vehicle, it shows a Square and Compass, and the writing says: “We don’t control everything. Only the important stuff.” As Masons, most of us have heard the totally incorrect phrases that “The Masons are out to take over the Government,” or “The Masons are trying to control the world.” The reality is, we have a difficult time figuring out what meat to serve at the fish fry. (Thank you, W.B. Roundy!)
The window decal is 100% correct, however; we don’t control everything. The important stuff? Let me share some thoughts on that part of the statement. There is a force more powerful than any government, more powerful than the nuclear weapons we all fear. This force can divert water, settle a continent, feed the hungry and bind up the wounds of the afflicted. It can put a man on the moon, and create weapons that could destroy all mankind.
It is the human mind. You have one, I have one, the fellow in the car next to you at the red light has one. Masonry delights in accepting as one of it’s goals the education of man, and thereby the improvement of man’s condition on this planet. Masonry acknowledges the value of a public school education and the reward of college or post-graduate work; and while it emphasizes education as a whole, it focuses upon the “seven liberal arts and sciences” (liberal in this sense is not a political term); this focus is deliberately elucidated in the Fellowcraft Degree.
It is by design that Masonry focuses upon education, for it is only by a virtuous education that a man can learn to control himself, to keep his passions and prejudices within due bounds, and allow himself to see the same level of goodness in his fellow man that he sees in himself. It is by education that we
learn to co-operate, to work as a team, to see the greater good as being more important than individual adornment.
Education, in fine, is the control of the mind-your control of your mind, I the control of mine. The decal is correct:
“We don’t control everything. Only the important stuff.”

Announcing the 365 Club (Fundraiser)
My Brothers, I have been a member of this august Fraternity, and Twin Peaks Lodge #32 in particular, for 38 years. I have listened, as you have, to various Brother’s discourse on the subject, idea and principle of having our own Lodge building, or at the very least, a building suitable for one or more Lodges to call
home. A building with enough room to properly display our degree work; to hold a Grand visitation , or even enough room to hold our annual installation of Officers. We have made a few rather half-hearted attempts over the past 3 decades at fund raising to make this dream come true; and we do have the
Building fund (investment account) that was left to our care by our predecessors.
And here we sit. Changing course from several decades of precedent, Worshipful Master Lyle Glenn Miller, in planning for this year, created a building/fundraising committee charged with (a) starting some fundraising activities to make this decades-old dream a reality, (b) determining the interest of other Masonic bodies in perhaps joining us in this endeavor, and (c) starting the process of determining what such a building would look like.
In the February business meeting, Worshipful Master Lyle Glenn Miller and the lodge approved the creation of a 365 Building Fundraiser. The concept is simple: a member of this Lodge pledges to donate $1.00 per day, or $365.00 per year, to the building fund. The Secretary and the Treasurer will receive and deposit the monies collected, as per normal Lodge business. The monies will be transferred to the investment account when an aggregate of $1000.00 is received from the members. Proper records will be kept, and donors will have their names inscribed on a plaque when their donations equal $365.00. As we are not a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, these donations are not tax deductible. All Donations are voluntary.
You can find the page on this website for making your donation by clicking on this hotlink.
I did some math. If this fund had been started when I became a Mason 38 years ago, and 50% of our brothers had made donations of $365.00 per year since then, we would have collected just over $625,000 by today. That figure does not include any interest or investment return on the donations. What about it, Brothers? Is Twin Peaks Lodge-your Lodge- worth $1.00 a day to you?

THE SQUARE
A Masonic Poem
It matters not whate’er your lot
Or what your task may be,
One duty there remains for you,
One duty stands for me.
Be you a doctor skilled and wise
Or do your work for wage,
A laborer upon the street
An artist on the stage;
One glory still awaits for you,
One honor that is fair,
To have men say as you pass by:
“That fellow’s on the square.”
Ah, here’s a phrase that stands for much,
‘Tis good old English too;
It means that men have confidence
In everything you do.
It means that what you have you’ve earned,
And that you’ve done your best,
And when you go to sleep at night
Untroubled you may rest.
It means that conscience is your guide,
And honor is your care;
There is no greater phrase than this:
“That fellow’s on the square.”
And when I die I would not wish
A lengthy epitaph;
I do not want a headstone large,
Carved with fulsome chaff.
Pick out no single deed of mine,
If such a deed there be,
To ‘grave upon my monument,
For those that come to see.
Just this one phrase of all I choose,
To show my life was fair:
“Here sleepth now a fellow who
Was always on the square.”
I found this poem, uncredited, in the book “Short Talks on Masonry,” written
by Worshipful Brother Joseph Fort Newton in 1928 for the Masonic Service
Association of the United States.
